cialist in the cardiac care unit and cardiac observation unit at UCLA Medical Center and is an assistant professor of nursing at the UCLA School of Nursing, Los Angeles, Calif. by a computer and converted into a measurement of cardiac output. Cardiac output is inversely proportional to the area under the curve. The normal cardiac output curve has a rapid smooth upstroke and a gradual downstroke (Figure 1). A small area under the curve indicates a high cardiac output. The faster blood flows through the heart, the earlier the peak and sharper the drop, because the catheter senses temperature change over a short period. A low cardiac output results in a larger area under the curve. When blood flows slowly (low cardiac output), the area under the curve (temperature change over time) is greater because the catheter senses changes in temperature over a longer period. The curves vary according to the patient’s clinical condition and according to deviations in technique (Figure 2). Concerns about contamination of prefilled syringes of injectate and proximal port of a pulmonary artery catheter located in the right atrium. In the atrium, the injectate mixes with the blood and passes through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. A thermistor within the catheter senses the change in blood temperature as the blood passes the catheter tip located in the pulmonary artery. A curve that shows the change in temperature over time is calculated ProtocolsforPractice

Continuous and intermittent cardiac output measurement: pulmonary artery catheter versus aortic transpulmonary technique.
BACKGROUND Cardiac output (CO) can be measured intermittently by bolus thermodilution methods in the pulmonary artery (COpa) or in the aorta (COart). A continuous thermodilution method (CCO) and a method for continuous estimation using the arterial pulse wave (PCCO) are also available. METHODS We compared two methods of intermittent CO measurements in patients during liver transplantation: CO...
متن کاملNon-invasive measurement of cardiac output using an iterative, respiratory-based method
Editor’s key points † Current non-invasive monitors of cardiac output suffer from significant practical limitations. † A novel respiratory-based method involving sequential gas delivery to control alveolar ventilation is described and compared with bolus pulmonary artery thermodilution. † This novel method was validated in a porcine model of liver transplantation, and is therefore a promising a...
متن کاملLack of agreement between bioimpedance and continuous thermodilution measurement of cardiac output in intensive care unit patients
BACKGROUND: Bolus thermodilution is the standard bedside method of cardiac output measurement in the intensive care unit (ICU). The Baxter Vigilance monitor uses a modified thermodilution pulmonary artery catheter with a thermal filament to give a continuous read-out of cardiac output. This has been shown to correlate very well with both the 'gold standard' dye dilution method and the bolus the...

متن کاملA new method of measuring cardiac output in man using lithium dilution.
We describe a new indicator dilution method of measuring cardiac output in man. A bolus injection of lithium chloride 0.6 mmol was given via a central venous catheter and arterial plasma [Li+] recorded using a specially developed sensor incorporating an Li(+)-selective electrode. Cardiac output was derived from the lithium dilution curve, with a correction for packed cell volume. Lithium diluti...
